So its Been a While….
So its been a while….
I just wanted to say sorry to anyone that may have been expecting another post since I started this blog… I just needed to take a step back, grab a deep breath, and move forward after the NCAA’s. Taking some time to reflect on this past season has brought me a multitude of feelings and emotions…
First I would like to say I couldn’t be prouder of Bo for the successes he has had on and off the mat. This past season was for the most part amazing, but…. That’s the problem! The season didn’t end the way anyone anticipated it to end. The harsh reality of wrestling is the fact that it’s not very forgiving…
Wrestling lets you know when you haven’t been disciplined with your diet or your sleep, it will tear you down if your training hasn’t been what it should, it will let you know if you haven’t mastered your techniques in the off-season… But the harshest and cruelest experience in wrestling is when you feel you have done everything right and still do not reach your goals…
We often can’t or do not understand why things happen…Many have the perspective that things just happen for no particular reason at all… But there is no way this can be true! Everything that we experience has a significant effect on who we are and what we become…
Looking back on some key moments in Bo’s wrestling career there have been some defining moments. These events have not always been the happiest or most successful moments, but they have definitely been memorable and influential. I remember when Bo was ready to step on to the ‘Big Stage’ for the first time; which in this case was Rocky Mountain Nationals. Up until that point Bo had only wrestled in local tournaments and done extremely well.
The RMN was one of those brutally honest moments that showed us that wrestling can be taken to an entirely new level… Looking back there have been several of those moments including: USA Western Regional, USA Folk/Free/Greco Nationals, and 8th & 9th grade when Bo competing in the New Mexico and Texas High school State tournaments.
Each one of these experiences had a significant impact on the person and wrestler that we see today… Experiences are like steps that lead you to where you want to go but sometimes the steps get a little steeper and farther apart.
Stopping to rest or even go back down would be easy, but the reward is at the top and it’s all about who is willing to take that next step! I have to admit those experiences also shaped me as a father and a coach as well. While the journey hasn’t always been easy, it is very rewarding to look back and see how the tough times actually have had significant impact on future success!
I hope some of what I write makes sense and may put perspective on how I view things and what has helped shape my son… I probably just needed to get some of this off my chest and move on…Looking forward to what lies ahead…
